An update from our Chairman

Date Posted: 22 June 2024 An update from our Chairman

Dear Members, Colleagues and Friends

I trust you are all looking forward to the summer and sunny days ahead. A short update on the evolution and future of the Business Club.

We have a new President of the Club which is very exciting, and I will be letting you know who that is soon. In the next couple of weeks, I will also be announcing more changes and points of interest. We are on the cusp of appointing a new suite of Board Members to the Club, a new media partner, as well as the full programme for 2024/2025.

As we all know from our own business, times change and to adapt to those changes, is essential if we are to thrive in the future and leave a healthy legacy for the next generation. The Cardiff Business Club is no different and I have that ‘next generation’ very much in mind. If they are not already our leaders, they soon will be, and I would love to see your younger colleagues actively engaged with the Club as we get ready for the next season from September onwards. On 3rd September we are meeting at Sophia Gardens in the Amber Lounge. We will be addressed by Mark Rhydderch-Roberts, the new Chairman of Glamorgan CCC and details will follow in the next few weeks.

Future Programme

Next season’s programme will be different as we develop new ways of reaching out to and embracing the wider business community in Cardiff. The programme is being expanded beyond monthly dinners to include several roundtables over the next year and I am delighted we are working with the Design Commission for Wales to set up in-depth workshop discussions on major subjects affecting business and society today.

The first two roundtables before Christmas 2024 will be on the subjects of ‘Empty Offices’ and ‘Transport Challenges’. These may be of particular interest to you and further details will follow soon, as will details of regular more informal gatherings exclusively for Club Members when we can enjoy each other’s fellowship, network vigorously, and all gain greater value from being members of the Club.

Our second dinner guest on 24th September, will be Dame Elan Closs Stephens, who has in recent times sat in the Chair of the Council of BBC Governors and before that S4C. Dame Elan has much to share around the future of broadcasting and the challenges it now faces.

On 24th October, we welcome Kevin Gardiner, an Ely boy, who is the Global Investment Manager of Rothschild and a valued member of the Cardiff Capital Region board. Kellie Beirne the CEO of CCR will also be involved. I am very excited to announce, on the 28th November, we will be co-hosting the annual CBI dinner which historically has been held in the Cardiff City Hall but this year, will be in Sophia Hall at the cricket ground with its capacity of up to 450. In many ways, this will be the one of the events of the year in Wales.

Booking for this prestigious event can be made through the CBC website, and if you and your business are interested in sponsorship opportunities, please email the office and we will forward to the CBI to get in touch. The principal speaker will be Rupert Soames OBE, formerly of Serco and now President of the CBI. Rupert you will know is of course, Winston Churchill’s grandson and has a reputation of being an engaging and charismatic speaker.

Many more varied and attractive speakers will follow in the months ahead including a former Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Wales, the Governor of the Bank of England, dates permitting, one of the country’s leading Racehorse trainers, a previous Head of a leading High Street bank in the UK and Europe and many others.

We are close to securing one of Wales’s few billionaires and are awaiting on a date for the visit from the Chairman of a (local) professional Football Club, (close to my heart) who has enjoyed a stellar career as an investment banker in the City of London!

Membership and Sponsorship

It is for these and other reasons I wanted to make you aware of the opportunities to be involved as we prepare for an exciting new phase. In terms of membership and sponsorship, I am very conscious of the multiple demands on your time and the budgets of the business, as well as that affecting the individuals you employ, particularly younger people. If you or your colleagues want to join as an individual, please click on the link here which will take you to the relevant page for personal memberships.

Corporate Memberships can be made by contacting office@cardiffbusinessclub.org. It would be fantastic if your business could be involved so please consider taking a Corporate Membership and becoming an integral part of the Club.

Businesses will have the opportunity of bringing along to Club dinners, up to 10 guests, either spread across the entire season or by taking one table at a dinner. Please note for clarity that the CBI dinner is exempt from this, and has its own arrangements of course, which we and CBI will disseminate soon.

Furthermore, Corporate Members will have their logos and be named on our website and all Club programmes, and I would encourage you to share the opportunity across your business. I will try and ensure that as many such Members as possible, will have opportunity at events across the season for profile, be that in giving thanks from the stage or similar.

We have several sponsorship packages available also, including that of dinner sponsor, as well as a limited number of season and drinks sponsorship packages, that will entitle sponsors to heightened PR coverage before, during and after events. If this is of interest please let me know or contact Paul at thorburn.15@btopenworld.com

For individuals, the benefits of belonging to the Club will be evident and are set out more fully on the website here save that I would highlight the fact that members will be able to avail themselves of early access and have priority in booking all events and bring guests along. Excellent networking which as you and I know, is essential for businesspeople of all ages, but notably those embarking on their careers in Cardiff and the region.

The future is exciting for Cardiff Business Club, and I would encourage us all to be involved and help make it the success we want, adding value to our businesses, expanding our networks and bringing home a genuine sense of joy to our efforts.

Best wishes for a happy and relaxing summer.
