It is with immense delight that we are to welcome Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt to the Hilton Hotel in Cardiff on Monday 18th February. 

As an expert in artificial intelligence (AI) and one of the originators of the interdisciplinary field of Web Science, Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt is one of the UK’s most notable computer scientists as well as Principal of Jesus College in Oxford and a Professor of computing science at the University of Oxford.  

After graduating in 1978 with a First-Class Honours in Philosophy and Psychology from University of Newcastle, Professor Sir Shadbolt conducted his postgraduate studies in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh before joining the Department of Psychology at Nottingham where he was founder of the AI Research group.  

It was in 2000 that he moved to Southampton’s School of Electronics and Computer Science where he focused his research and supported the development of the World Wide Web.  

2009 saw Sir Professor Shadbolt team up with Sir Tim Berners-Lee as Information Advisor to the UK Government which led to the release of public sector data as open data. This then contributed to his appointment at Coalition Government to the UK Public Sector Transparency Board.  

Chairman and Co-founder of the Open Data Institute (ODI), Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt specialises in further exploring Open Data and its innovation, research and training internationally and in the UK.
