24 October 2016

Having graduated with a degree in economics from the University of Leeds in 1975, Peter Hendy started his career with London Transport, moving up the corporate ladder before becoming Deputy Director of FirstGroup’s UK Bus division.

Between 2001-2006, he served as Managing Director of Surface Transport for Transport for London and was later appointed Commissioner of Transport for London – a role he continued until assuming his current position as Chairman of Network Rail in 2015.

Peter was awarded a CBE in the 2006 New Year Honours for his work in keeping London’s public transport network running during and after the 7 July 2005 London bombings. In 2013, he received a knighthood for ensuring the effective running of the capital’s infrastructure during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

DID YOU KNOW: Sir Peter was the longest serving person in charge of London’s transport since Lord Ashford in 1947.
